North Otago Search and Rescue 16th / 17th February 2008 We (Webmaster, White SWB Pajero) joined the 4WD trip on the Sunday and chose Mt ST Bathans, as this sounded like the best of the two trips from some that had done the Saturday. The Day was fine with little cloud giving us magnificent views over the Mackenzie Country, Mt Cook, Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo. Sorry to hear that the Saturday had been a little cloudy. The track, mainly metal, wound up the tussock foot hills to finally arrive at the top of the ST Bathans Ranges. After taking an look at the small lakes held into the schist covered rock, we headed approx south along the range. The views continued to be amazing right up to the top of MT ST Bathans. The wind down, with some tight corners over schist and rock, where at one stage my Auto 4WD Systems Lockers kicked in to make me have to back up for another turn. At least that was better than losing traction when backing up over the corner. We finally arrived for a late lunch at the West Branch Manuherikia River Hut. (Well I could be wrong with the name here.) After lunch we headed up the river, some river crossings and a little mud to dirty the shinnies. This lead to the Omarama Saddle where we rejoined the track to head out. A very good trip, thanks to Otago Search and Rescue, Land Owners and all. Click left or right arrow to view icons.
